A STAR IS BORN (2018)

A Star is BornSeasoned musician Jackson Maine discovers—and falls in love with—struggling artist Ally. She has just about given up on her dream to make it big as a singer—until Jack coaxes her into the spotlight. But even as Ally’s career takes off, the personal side of their relationship is breaking down, as Jack fights an ongoing battle with his own internal demons.

A surprisingly good movie given it’s a remake of a remake of a remake! I haven’t seen the original so can’t comment on how this one stands up in comparison to those. This one, however, feels fresh and first time director, Bradley Cooper, has made a very professional looking film. Not only that, he can sing! And … Lady Gaga can act! There’s a real chemistry between them and Cooper’s commitment to the whole movie being good rather than it being all about him allows him to step back and allow Lady Gaga to stand in the spotlight when needed. The acting from both of them is top notch with performances that are totally believable.

And then, of course, there’s the music. The opening concert shot is sensational and authentic. The music set pieces are dramatic and engaging with cinematography that brings us as audiences right up close and personal.

A STAR IS BORN is great entertainment. Perhaps a little slow in places but, overall, a worthy achievement. Definitely worth seeing on the big screen.
