AVENGERS: ENDGAME (2019)
After the devastating events of Avengers: Infinity War, the universe is in ruins due to the efforts of the Mad Titan, Thanos. With the help of remaining allies, the Avengers must assemble once more in order to undo Thanos’ actions and restore order to the universe once and for all, no matter what consequences may be in store.

It’s an adequate end to the Avengers series. It’s very long given that so many characters and storylines (21 previous movies!) need to be resolved and wrapped up. It’s a lot more sombre than previous films in the series and it is not until the end that we get lots of action. Some of the characters come to an end and others will stay around for what I assume will be other movies in the Marvel Universe. The acting is good and the story has considerable depth as it tries to spend time with each of the characters. There are the touches of humour that help to lift the melancholy of the story but there isn’t as much as in previous episodes. There are regret and sadness underlying almost every scene right up until the very end. The special effects and cinematography suit the nature of the story. I watched it in 3D but I don’t think it added anything significant. Overall, the focus of ENDGAME is to tie up everything neatly which it succeeds in doing even if, as a result, the experience is not as lively and satisfying as usual. It’s only satisfying in the sense that we have all of the answers we need along with the “grief” of saying goodbye to some of the characters. Diehard fans are going to love this final instalment, I’m sure — and be hanging out for the next Marvel offering to come along. But its slow and overly sentimental approach ultimately takes the edge of what should have been a great, climactic finish.
