BEAST (2017)
A troubled woman living in an isolated community finds herself pulled between the control of her oppressive family and the allure of a secretive outsider suspected of a series of brutal murders.

A fresh take on the serial killer genre where we are constantly asked to doubt whether or not Pascal (Johnny Flynn) is the guilty person or not. And while we do that, we see Moll (Jessie Buckley) becoming increasingly involved with Pascal driven by the oppression of her family to escape into a world that is romantic and fairytale-like. It’s an intriguing, bleak story which develops slowly and thoughtfully. The best thing about it is Jessie Buckley’s performance — let’s hope we see more of her (and the director, Michael Pearce) in the future. BEAST is rough around the edges but it’s definitely worth seeing.
