COLD WAR (2018)
A passionate love story between two people of different backgrounds and temperaments, who are fatefully mismatched and yet condemned to each other. Set against the background of the Cold War in the 1950s in Poland, Berlin, Yugoslavia and Paris, the film depicts an impossible love story in impossible times.

I had very high expectations for COLD WAR given the rave reviews by critics. It is a well-made movie and very aesthetically attractive. It’s filmed in beautiful black and white making it great to look at. But the story is boring and comes across as inauthentic. It’s hard to understand why the two main characters would be attracted to each other and why they would want to be in each others’ presence. So the idea that they are ‘condemned to each other’ is an almost impossible premise to accept. Possibly the only reason to see it is if you like Polish folk tunes and Parisian torch songs. If that doesn’t attract you, give it a miss.
