Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023)
In the annals of gaming history, Dungeons & Dragons has long been a fixture, its origins tracing back to the 1970s. Across decades, it has established a vast following of fans who have found the game’s captivating world irresistible. As someone who has never enjoyed playing this game, I was curious about how I would receive the new movie DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES, currently playing in cinemas. Would it be accessible to me, a neophyte? Or would I be confounded by its many references to the game’s mythology?
In this typical fantasy tale, we follow the exploits of Edgin, a debonair burglar, who joins forces with a motley crew of adventurers, including Holga, a ferocious barbarian; Xenk, a magnetic bard; Simon, a cunning druid; Doric, a true fighter, and Kira, a youthful rogue. Their quest is to retrieve a lost relic that can change the world’s fate. But things turn dangerous when they cross paths with Forge, a ruthless warlord with designs on the artifact. Along the way, they encounter dragons, dungeons, magic, and betrayal, as they discover the true significance of honour among thieves.
The film boasts an impressive roster of actors, including Chris Pine, who plays the part of Edgin with charm and wit; Michelle Rodriguez, who embodies the role of Holga with ferocity and intensity; and Hugh Grant, who portrays Forge with menace and cunning. Each performer brings their flair to their respective characters, and it’s a pleasure to watch them revel in this world of high fantasy without feeling the need to overdo it.
The story is rife with classic fantasy elements, replete with characters that will be familiar to anyone who has seen a film of this genre. While the plot is somewhat predictable, it’s a lighthearted and enjoyable movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS is sure to be a treat for anyone who is a fan of the game or the fantasy genre, and it’s a movie that could easily be enjoyed as a family outing for kids aged 12 and up.
