Evil Dead Rise (2023)

Creepy mother

I don’t believe I’ve ever viewed any movies from the Evil Dead series before watching EVIL DEAD RISE – and judging by my reaction to it, I think it’s doubtful I’ll watch others or subsequent sequels either.

EVIL DEAD RISE follows two sisters who reunite at an LA apartment complex only for flesh-eating demons to be released from an ancient book interrupting their reunion. The siblings must then fight for their lives, protecting themselves and their family against nefarious forces attempting to take control of them all.

To provide a balanced review, let me begin with some positives about EVIL DEAD RISE: Alyssa Sutherland is excellent as Ellie – both terrifying yet heart-wrenching; gore and horror elements are ingeniously executed, resulting in authentically creepy moments, similar to other entries of this genre franchise – there are Easter eggs, or references fans will enjoy like utilising a chainsaw which pays homage to previous films set in solitary cabins.

Changing the location might make for a richer storyline in EVIL DEAD RISE. However, I can’t help but feel that this movie lacks creativity compared to other slash-and-kill horrors that are pretty much all alike these days. A few amusing scenes are scattered throughout but not nearly enough light-hearted moments amongst all of the darkness and gruesomeness present here. Additionally, some of the violence depicted is excessive…and unsettling when considering that children are involved! Fans of blood and gore might enjoy EVIL DEAD RISE very much, but sadly for me, watching it felt like just another day at work.

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.
