Infinity Pool (2023)
Infinity Pool is the latest film from Brandon Cronenberg, the son of legendary horror director David Cronenberg. A couple travel to a tropical island resort for a relaxing vacation, only to discover a dark, twisted underworld of violence, sex and horror.
The film promises to be a provocative and disturbing exploration of human nature. Still, it fails to deliver on its potential—a weak script, poor pacing, shallow characters and gratuitous gore plague the film. The film tries to shock the audience with graphic scenes of torture, mutilation and rape, but it only succeeds in being repulsive and boring.
The film wastes the talents of its two leads, who have little chemistry and motivation. Skarsgard plays James, a frustrated writer who suffers from nightmares and writer’s block. Goth plays Gabi, a mysterious woman who seduces James and lures him into a dangerous game. Both actors are capable of much more, but they are given little to work with in this film.
The film also fails to create a convincing sense of place and atmosphere. The island resort is supposed to be a paradise that hides a hell, but it looks like a generic and bland location. The film does not explore the culture or history of the island, nor does it explain the origins or motives of the villains. The film relies on clichés and stereotypes, such as corrupt cops, drug dealers and cultists.
Infinity Pool is a disappointing dive into horror that does not live up to its hype or pedigree. The film is neither scary nor smart but rather dull and disgusting. Avoid it if you value good storytelling, character development, and artistic merit.
