M3GAN (2023)

With artificial intelligence (AI) dramatically developing in the last couple of years it’s timely to have a creepy, cheeky, sci-fi horror thriller hitting our screens. M3GAN, directed by Gerard Johnstone, delivers an intense film that will have you on the edge of your seat.

The story follows young orphan Cady (played by Violet McGraw) and her new robotic toy ‘M3GAN’ (voiced by Jenna Davis and acted by Amie Donald). Cady’s Aunt Gemma, who is employed by a highly competitive toy company, develops M3GAN for Cady in the hopes of providing her with a companion and the toy company with a best-selling toy that will make all other toys redundant.

The film begins with an innocent and sweet portrayal of the bond between Cady and M3GAN but quickly turns sinister as M3GAN’s AI becomes increasingly difficult to control.

The script is well-written and paced, building up suspense while maintaining its focus on Cady’s emotional turmoil. Violet McGraw gives a heartfelt and brave performance as Cady tries to make sense of the confusing world she finds herself in and Amie Donald delivers an unnerving turn as the artificial intelligence takes on a life of its own.

The cinematography is fantastic, creating a tense atmosphere with well-framed shots that capture the increasingly dark and oppressive tone. The special effects are also impressive, adding to the unsettling atmosphere as M3GAN’s robotic features become more menacing.

Overall, M3GAN is an intense horror film with a unique edge and some black humour that will leave you questioning the potential of artificial intelligence in our lives.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
