MID90s (2018)

Stevie (Sunny Suljic) is a sweet 13-year-old about to explode. His mom is loving and attentive, but a little too forthcoming about her romantic life. His big brother is a taciturn and violent bully. So Stevie searches his working-class Los Angeles suburb for somewhere to belong. He finds it at the Motor Avenue skate shop.

Seems to have not really hit its potential. It does, once again, remind us of the complex nature of childhood for some people. Sunny Suljic is very good as Stevie. It’s a slice-of-life story so more observational than a simple linear narrative. The most disappointing aspect of the movie is the lack of fleshing out the other characters in the story. But it’s edgy and often very confronting in its portrayal of the behaviour of the characters. Overall, there is nothing really new in MID90s but not bad for Jonah Hill’s directorial debut.
