Mortal Kombat (2021)

Washed-up MMA fighter Cole Young (Lewis Tan), unaware of his heritage, and hunted by Emperor Shang Tsung’s best warrior, Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim), seeks out and trains with Earth’s greatest champions as he prepares to stand against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe.

There are only two reasons to see MORTAL KOMBAT: 1) the fight scenes, and 2) Josh Lawson (who plays Kano). The fight scenes are superbly choreographed and executed and a thrilling to watch. And Josh Lawson brings some much-needed humour to the story — and his comedic timing is great. He carries the movie. All the other characters are bland, the acting is average, the story is superficial, and the dialogue is often cheesy. If you go into this movie knowing precisely what to expect, turn your brain off, and keep your expectations low, you’ll have fun. And, if you like this, you’ll line up for the inevitable sequel. Let’s hope that breaks the general rule of poor sequels and is better than this one.
