Nobody (2021)

Nobody (2021) poster

Hutch Mansell (Bob Odenkirk), a suburban dad, overlooked husband, nothing neighbor — a “nobody.” When two thieves break into his home one night, Hutch’s unknown long-simmering rage is ignited and propels him on a brutal path that will uncover dark secrets he fought to leave behind.

Written by Derek Kolstad, who also wrote the John Wick movies, NOBODY is a much better, more nuanced, deeper story than those. Bob Odenkirk is excellent as Hutch Mansell who underplays the part with a dry wit that is hugely entertaining. At first sight, it’s hard to imagine Odenkirk as a tough and ruthless killer. But seeing how the plot unfolds and develops his character brings a freshness to the genre. There is a lot of high-level action violence but, weaved around this there is some excellent humour. While NOBODY has the overall arc of the typical revenge action thriller, it adds layers of ethical ambiguity that makes the narrative thought provoking. NOBODY is an excellent, entertaining action thriller. And it’s got a great, ironic soundtrack too!

Rating: 4 out of 5.
