Scream VI (2023)

As far as I can remember, I have not watched any previous films from the Scream franchise, but I decided to try something new and see SCREAM VI. It was an average film with a few moments of entertainment. The story follows the survivors of previous Ghostface attacks, the primary antagonist of the Scream film series, as they relocate to New York City and confront a new killer who desires to complete what was initiated in Woodsboro, a fictitious town created for the film series. As the characters attempt to identify the person behind the mask and the reason for their targeting, the film is full of unexpected twists, turns, and surprises.

Due to the Scream movies’ high level of self-referentiality, I am sure that I missed out on some of the references and jokes made in the previous films. However, the writers seem to enjoy ridiculing some of the cliches and tropes of the slasher genre. Nevertheless, some viewers may desire something more unique. The cast is diverse, pleasant, and cooperative, conveying their sense of humour. Naturally, you will crave gore if you are fond of slasher films, even comedic ones. SCREAM VI includes some creative and brutal kills that are both shocking and entertaining. The gore effects are realistic and well-crafted.

The film also contains some clever meta-commentary on the current state of horror films in 2023, social media, fandom, remakes, and other topics. Furthermore, there is a satisfying conclusion that wraps up the story of the Woodsboro legacy attacks while also leaving space for future instalments.

Even with the potential predictability for certain viewers and some moments of dialogue-heavy and expositional content, fans of the series will unquestionably appreciate this film.

Rating: 3 out of 5.
