Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023)
Heading in to see SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS, I must confess that my initial expectations were relatively low. However, despite its shaky start, the movie eventually improved about halfway through and ended entertaining.
FURY OF THE GODS is the sequel to the 2019 film SHAZAM! This superhero flick follows the story of Billy Batson (Asher Angel) and his alter ego, Shazam (Zachary Levi). Having already saved the world from the nefarious Doctor Sivana (Mark Strong), Billy and his family enjoy their lives to the fullest. But when the ancient gods of yore threaten to destroy everything he holds dear, it is up to Billy and his extended family of superheroes (known as the “Shazamily”) to save the day.
David F. Sandberg directs SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS and adheres to the basic superhero formula with its abundance of action and lighthearted comedy. The plot may not be groundbreaking, but it is still enjoyable due to its charming characters and entertaining set pieces. The movie maintains a brisk pace, never outstaying its welcome.
The cast of SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS is essentially the same as any other superhero movie, with a few new additions. The returning actors are all excellent, and they do their utmost to elevate the material given to them. Asher Angel is a standout as Billy Batson, imbuing his character with infectious enthusiasm and charm, making him one of the most endearing characters in any superhero movie this year.
The new additions to the cast include Helen Mirren as Hespera, a goddess; Lucy Liu as Kalypso, another goddess, who are determined to destroy the world; and Rachel Zegler as Anthea, a young woman whose link to the gods remains shrouded in mystery. Despite being upstaged by the returning cast, all three actresses give outstanding performances, showcasing their talents to the fullest.
The special effects in SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS are impressive and enhance the movie’s larger-than-life action sequences. The battles between gods, monsters, and superheroes are visually stunning.
Overall, SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS is an entertaining superhero movie with a good dose of action and humour. Although the storyline may not be groundbreaking, it moves rapidly and benefits from superb performances from its cast. The special effects are top-notch and result in some truly epic set pieces. If you’re seeking an enjoyable superhero flick that does not take itself too seriously, then SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS is worth checking out.
