THE HATE U GIVE (2018)

The Hate U GiveRaised in a poverty-stricken slum, a 16-year-old girl named Starr now attends a suburban prep school. After she witnesses a police officer shoot her unarmed best friend, she’s torn between her two very different worlds as she tries to speak her truth.

Brilliant movie! Starts off tense and doesn’t let up all the way through. Has so much to say and says it so well. A little bit preachy at times, but other than that, THE HATE U GIVE is excellent! Amandla Stenberg, who plays Starr, is fantastic. All the acting is great. The story is compelling and handles its themes with power and sensitivity. The themes are complex and the director has expertly navigated his way through them. In fact, this is a very courageous, intelligent film given the subject matter. It’s based on a young adult novel and shows that this literature doesn’t have to be all about fantasy, action, and apocalyptic thrills. This one must be seen. Loved it!
