The Last Vermeer (2019)

An artist (Han van Meegeren) is suspected of selling a valuable painting to the Nazis, but there is more to the story than meets the eye.

An entertaining story that doesn’t tackle its subject as deeply as it could have — but it’s a fascinating piece of history, nonetheless. Guy Pearce, who plays van Meegeren, considered by many to be the most famous art forger of all time, is outstanding. Pearce inhabits the role and plays it with restraint. The real man was very flamboyant. It’s a complicated story with a surprise twist in the middle that changes our perception of what is going on. If you like crime and court drama, this is for you. And you’ll find out why van Meegeren became a Dutch hero while the story exploring ideas of morality and integrity and their complicated messiness.

Rating: 3 out of 5.
