THE LEISURE SEEKER (2018)

The Leisure SeekerA runaway couple go on an unforgettable journey from Boston to Key West, recapturing their passion for life and their love for each other on a road trip that provides revelation and surprise right up to the very end.

Donald Sutherland and Helen Mirren are usually top-notch actors but in this cliché-ridden story, they feel like they are trying hard to act. All the way through I was conscious they were acting and a good movie shouldn’t make one feel that way. The whole thing feels inauthentic and contrived. There are a few moments of humour but I thought it would be a lot funnier than it was. There was no emotional resonance and very little drama. And the use of Alzheimer’s as the core plot device comes across as more or a plot device than any attempt to genuinely engage with the experience of someone suffering from it. I was glad when it finished.
