The Lost City (2022)

The Lost City is set in the jungle of Colombia, where a reclusive romance novelist (Sandra Bullock) and her cover model (Channing Tatum) are swept into a cutthroat adventure when they are kidnapped.

The story is a failed attempt to be a thriller and a romance all at once. The movie is not suspenseful, nor is it particularly romantic. The acting is good, and the movie is visually stunning. However, its weak story will leave you feeling disappointed. While Bullock and Tatum are the two main stars, Pitt’s performance, while brief, is the highlight of the movie. He steals every scene he’s in and elevates the material.

The story is fast paced but the dialogue is stilted and often cheesy. It is riddled with cliches and there is little, if anything, that is original. Bullock and Tatum have good chemistry together. However, even they can’t save the movie from its lacklustre story. The humour falls flat, and the action sequences are uninspired. The cinematography is the only thing that salvages the film. It is shot beautifully and makes effective use of its jungle setting.

The Lost City is a visually stunning but uninspired film. Its weak story is saved by its strong cast, but even they can’t do much with the material they’re given. If you’re looking for a fast -paced adventure, you’ll be better served elsewhere. However, if you’re a fan of either Bullock or Tatum, you may find something to enjoy here.
