The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021)

Macbeth, the Thane of Glamis, receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will become King of Scotland. Consumed by ambition and spurred to action by his wife, Macbeth murders his king and takes the throne for himself.

I’ve seen several versions of Shakespeare’s Macbeth and this one, THE TRAGEDY OF MACBETH, is the one I like best so far. Filmed in black and white with visually brilliant cinematography, it is compelling, riveting, magnificent. Denzel Washington plays Macbeth in one of his best performances. And Frances McDormand is excellent as Macbeth’s wife. And those witches! Played by one person with incredible effect. The story which is described as “based on” Shakespeare’s Macbeth, has obviously been reduced to what is necessary to tell the story. But this makes it even more gripping. The Shakespearean language is delivered in a way which is accessible. This is a very original, daring, exciting take on this enduring tragedy.
