To the Bone (2017)

A young woman (Lily Collins) dealing with anorexia meets an unconventional doctor (Keanu Reeves) who challenges her to face her condition and embrace life.

TO THE BONE is a moving, respectful portrayal of eating disorders. The movie was made with the participation of several people suffering from eating disorders who also act in the movie. And Lily Colins, who pays the main character, has a history of suffering from the disorder. She lost weight (under professional supervision) to play her part and she does a brilliant job of her character. TO THE BONE can be difficult to watch, at times. But the problem of eating disorders needs to be heard and discussed much more in our communities.
The acting is excellent, and the diverse characters are well-drawn with their interactions coming across as authentic.
The story is slowly and gently told and does not sensationalise its subject. We feel deep empathy for them and their struggles.
It’s not easy to watch, and it can’t be called entertaining, but there are insights to be gained by watching this one.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
