WIDOWS (2018)

WidowsSet in contemporary Chicago, amid a time of turmoil, four women with nothing in common except a debt left behind by their dead husbands’ criminal activities, take fate into their own hands and conspire to forge a future on their own terms. They join forces to pull off a heist.

A very enjoyable, intelligent heist movie. Viola Davis (Suicide Squad), Michelle Rodriguez (The Fate of the Furious), Elizabeth Debicki (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2), and Cynthia Erivo (Bad Times at the El Royale) bring multi-layered, complex characters to life as the four widows struggle to work as a team to carry out the heist. The story is based on a TV series by the same name written by Lynda La Plante. The plot is intelligent and takes some unexpected turns as it explores corruption, sexism, and race. The script is not all about action (although there is, of course, some of that) or suspense (there is also some of that) but about the relationships between the women which are refreshingly rich and original. As a whole, it is a tough, entertaining movie.
